Skiing the Chic-Chocs
April 5th, 2010 adminLast week, I met up with the Meatheads and headed to the Chic-Choc Mountains in search of some backcountry skiing. All in all, it took 14 hours to get there, but was well worth it. The crew of Dan Marion, Stacey Rachdorf, Rooster, and myself set up base camp in a hostel on the coast about 30 minutes from the mountains. Despite the less than average snow year, we knew there were plenty of worthy lines to be skied. It was only a matter of waiting for the right time and safe snow pack. In typical east coast fashion, the forecast was filled with rain and our hopes of great skiing were all but gone. That night, we saw mixed precipitation resulting in a hard crust on the snow. As we headed up for what was the last day of the trip, we were hoping to see some good snow at higher elevations. When we pulled up to Virginie, our guide for the day, she had a big smile on her face. At that point we knew it wasn’t all bad. The night before, while it rained up to 4″ inches in parts of New England, the area we planned on skiing had received over a foot of fresh snow. Check out the new Meathead movie for a look at what went down.
